In a baby blessing ceremony, to anoint is to consecrate or make sacred by applying of small amount of oil or other liquid. In doing so, we bless and dedicate the child to God. I have used rose, almond and coconut oils. Sometimes we only anoint the baby’s forehead. Sometimes we anoint their foreheads and hearts —and sometimes we anoint them them head, heart, hands and feet. There are other anointings. One that I have done often, taught to me by my favorite Rabbi, is an anointing of drops of lemon juice, honey and wine upon the baby’s lips. This little object is made of pure silver — a cherub for the anointing!
